However if I hadn't reread The Island recently I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it quite as much, as a sequel it works perfectly but I'm slightly less certain of it as a standalone. A short story collection, One Cretan Evening, was published in September and both a third novel, The Thread is published in English in October and in Greek in November 2011. Both sides suffer gruesome punishments throughout the book, the Catholics are severely attacked when the Moors are rampaging through the mountain villages in the Alpujarra at the beginning of the story. And the frame she used: letting someone from the present stumble across the story from the past doesn't work, because the mixture of present and past doesn't work well. After her trip, she just can't stay away after she befriends an older gentleman and owner of a small bar. That said, it was still an excellent read. At this point to be honest I began to get a bit confused, having no previous visits to Spain or knowledge of the Spanish Civil War to work from I war relying on the author to indicate clearly what happened, but I got a bit lost between who was on which side and what they stood for and as a result found myself scanning some of the pages whilst not fulling taking in the setting. There are two strands to the story, a modern on e and one concerning the Spanish Civil War.

The Return By Victoria Hislop Book Review Essay

She "returns" to know more about Mercedes, who she thinks is her mother. A New Yorker living in the wilds of Ireland, he has children he never sees in California; a father he loathes in Brooklyn; and a wife, Claudette, who is a reclusive ex-film star given to shooting at anyone who ventures up their driveway. I loved this book, even though I found the love story bit just a little bit far fetched. In The Return, Victoria Hislop takes readers to Granada, Spain, to a world deeply affected by war and filled with dance, bullfighting, and passion.

The reason I love Victoria Hislop books and why she turned me onto historical fiction was because she writes fascinating fictional stories and characters based around true historical events. As life slowly begins to return to normal, these three women, thrown together by circumstance, become fast friends. I really didn't know much about the Spanish Civil War and this book had a lot of insight into that time - I actually felt I learned something while reading it. By: Edward Rutherfurd. But the coincidences on which this novel relies are just too contrived, and you can see the "twist" coming a mile off.

The dark and light sides of friendship breathlessly explored in a novel best saved for summer beachside reading. I expected to hear about the city of Granada how it was during the era of Al-Andalus many hundreds of years ago and even learn a few facts which I had not yet heard previously. Further along in the story we are transported to Adra, Almeria, along the Sierra Morena and eastwards to historic Cordoba. The true story of the Spanish civil war needs to be told, but not like this. Sonia meets an old man in a cafe, and over coffee, they talk a bit about what Granada was like before the changes brought by war. Unique and unforgettable adventure in Istanbul. I have always been a big fan of historical fiction as it really brings the past to life in a way that dry school books could never do.
