There are scarcely any crossings-out or rewrites in the manuscript, although the original shows how publisher Viking Press edited out Steinbeck's dozen uses of the word "fuck", in an attempt to make the novel less controversial. This is a first UK edition of this illustrated edition published by Cassell and Company. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, manuscript by Lewis Carroll. Bound in blue bonded leather, this edition features all of Carroll's best-known works, including Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass with the classic illustrations of John Tenniel. Bound in red cloth with cover decoration of the Cheshire Cat and Alice. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The recipient was Olive Augusta Langton Clarke who Carroll met in September 1883. A beautifully-designed rendition of Carroll's tale, housed in a heavy paper chemise which has been repaired AND the origonal box, also repaired but intact. This was the Under Ground, which would later become wonderland. Decorated endpapers by M. L. Kirk.
