Take the rage-fuelled metalcore of Parkway Drive and add the dark melodic sensibilities of At the Gates, and you got Bleed from Within's latest effort: Shrine. Shrine continues strongly from there, with second track Sovereign a powerfully heavy number that will get your head banging and your foot tapping, and later track Killing Time is another beautifully heavy track, treating the listener to a meaty wall of sound that deserves to be blasted at top volume. Hidden comments will still appear to the user and to the user's Facebook friends. It feels fresh and varied throughout owing to some inspired experimentation on the bands' part. Sonically and creatively a major step up from their 2020 album, Fracture; Shrine offers some of the best melodic metalcore to come out of the UK and even Europe. Bleed from Within are about as close as one reasonably gets to being a household name while championing a relatively niche genre, and they do it brilliantly. It listened as lockdowns tested our resolve, and gave us a reason to get out of our beds in the morning.

Through dropping 2020's Fracture in the heart of the pandemic, Scotland's Bleed From Within were robbed of the chance to tour it, but they nevertheless gave fans something substantial to get them through the dark times. The successor to critically acclaimed 2020 release Fracture, Shrine is an immense release that, to the tee, captures the essence of all things metalcore. "Shrine is the sonic embodiment of the dedication to our craft, representing everything that we've been through to stand where we are today, " the band explain. There have been occasional moments in BLEED FROM WITHIN's recorded past that arguably strayed too close to formulaic metalcore box-ticking, but that part of the band's sound is long gone and what remains is highly distinctive, dense with giant hooks and noticeably heavier than anything the Scots have done before. Even the acoustic interlude "Skye" feels like it has a place in the place in the proceedings, as it's a solid set-up for Bleed From Within returning to expansive sonics toward the end of "Stand Down. Levitate shifts focus quickly, a softer, more ambient intro awash with tempered vocals that are soon smothered as Kennedy screams the serenity into the abyss. Here, everything about Bleed from Within is likened to a well-oiled machine whether it be the precise percussion or eviscerating fretwork that effortlessly weaves from lacerating leads and hefty riffs to horrendously heavy breakdowns. He knows when to drop low for the breakdown, or support a melodious chorus, and it pays dividends on both fronts. Single Stand Down is next, so you should already know all about that before Death Defined rears its morbid head, led by guitar play and a stuttering sense of belonging that keeps a smooth tempo in the opening exchanges. Once you're logged in, you will be able to comment. Shrine is certainly their best album yet, but I already have a feeling that whatever they put out next will somehow be even more incredible. Such was the ferocity of their Bloodstock show and the (then) sixteen-year's experience – and let's not forget, this is the band who, in 2018, were informed at short-notice they would be following Suicidal Tendencies on stage – that the Glaswegian crew are sure to have added more cement to their reputation. Bleed from Within effortlessly makes great use of syncopation to make the chopped-up breakdown feel that much more intense—not to mention the way hair-raising dissonance meshes with melodious texture to drive home a austere atmosphere. Given what a statement of intent Alive seemed to be on release it feels slightly disingenuous that it's been tacked on at the end of the album. The answer lies in sixth full-length Shrine, a bold leap for the band that keeps some familiar territory while incorporating new elements and genres. When they unleash it live, as on their recent Bullet For My Valentine support slot or own headline tours, they solidify bonds with longtime fans and win new admirers. How on earth is Bleed From Within this damn consistent, somehow able to surpass their previous releases with each new album? Even when "Levitate" finds clean vocalist Steven Jones indulging in Linkin Park-ish choruses, Bleed From Within rises to the occasion with epic melodies to match the song's devastating mosh part. Denied the chance to tour the record properly, BLEED FROM WITHIN did the decent thing and simply moved on to the next creative challenge, buoyed by much evidence that, at last, victory was imminent. Opening with one of the three singles in I Am Damnation amid a swirling mass of industrial style chantings and whispered vocals, Bleed From Within set the tone for an album with no rules or limitations, bound by nothing except the will of the five band members. While Shrine doesn't reinvent the genre, it does reinvigorate it. Put simply, Shrine is breathtaking, and showcases Bleed From Within at the (current) pinnacle of their career. Nuance remains evident on the mid-tempo barn-burner "Invisible Enemy. " It has everything you'd want from a metal album; breakdowns, blast beats, clean and unclean vocals and more. Like previously released single, I Am Damnation – which itself dropped in November last year – Levitate shows a band at the top of their game, able to write earworm melodies and carefully arranged orchestration alongside some of the most pummeling riffs in metalcore right now.
This is a song to raise the dead, full of guitar solos and double kicks that accentuate the strengths of the band. We just couldn't comprehend it. Indeed, a track like "Killing Time" doesn't need much extra to make its impact.
