I suppose this ties into the Andy's Coming observation; no one exists outside of Chiamaka and Devon. Publisher: Feiwel & Friends. American readers may be surprised by Ace of Spades' grasp and interrogation of class. You can't trust everyone around you and not everyone wants you to be safe. The two narrators for Devon and Chiamaka do a fantastic job giving those characters realistic voices in the narrative. Instead, she drags the microphone forward, not yet done with her soliloquy. Despite their differences, I found myself loving this little friendship and how they balanced each other out. I really enjoyed reading her chapters. Ace of Spades was no exception.

I don't like when Black writers especially play into stereotypes for shock value like that. I turn to find Jack in the audience, wanting to give him our What the hell? Characters Chiamaka and Devon are both complex yet relatable characters. But I've never been more pleased to be proven wrong. Terrell did not even go to school. I honestly don't know what to say, except from this. So watching Get Out was really transformative for me. Ace of Spades took my breath away time and time again. What I will talk about though is the characters. This review doesn't even come close to doing this book justice, not with the way it explores relevant themes that appealed to me and had me losing my mind a little bit, and certainly not with its haunting social commentary that will linger in my mind for months to come. If Max, Ruby, and Cecelia are all main characters, Chiamaka is the protagonist. Silently, Headmaster Ward opens it, the paper's crinkle amplified to a blaring shriek through the speakers.

In the same vein as Gossip Girl, an anonymous person reveals personal details about Devon and Chi that they'd rather stay hidden. Chiamaka is biracial and super rich, but she still feels like she's never going to be enough unless she pushes her ambitions further. It doesn't just discuss these themes but digs deeper and questions everything and it was compelling and downright chilling. It's a searing thriller about class, race, identity, and the horrors of surviving high school. Despite being on opposite ends of the popularity spectrum at school, they decide to unite their forces to face this stranger. I had a few guesses and they were all wrong! Ace of Spades never shies away from how all-encompassing and rotten the system is at its very core, no matter how much the characters or even the readers may want to reject or deny that horror. I don't want to go into too much detail with this because I think it's best to go into this book blind and just let it blow your mind. And I also wanted it to relate to people in a way they'd be able to understand, and US-centric stories are what's globally understood. What follows was a heartwarming and heartbreaking story of institutional racism, coming out, breakups, and new relationships.

I screw my eyes shut, forcing myself to think of something else. The exploration into the rotten core of institutionalised racism provides the perfect, insidious backdrop to this high stakes thriller. • The only reminder I got of Gossip Girl was Aces. I'm Nigerian and the references to Nigerian food, cities and so on gave me a pride boost! I was originally going to make this review a spoiler free review, but i don't think i can hold it all in. Chiamaka Adebayo and Devon Richards are the only two Black kids at Niveus and they both have had very different lives during their time at the school. Even though they have the same skin colour, they couldn't be anymore different. Another thing I loved is that it never felt preachy or too heavy for its target readership, despite the mature themes the author tackles. Chiamaka Adebayo is absolutely badass, cutthroat and wealthy. She's bisexual and mixed race, with the white side of her family distancing themselves because she's "too dark". When a publisher pre-empts a book, it means they're willing to pay a hefty sum to grab that book before another publisher can. All opinions are my own. 4% diversity rating. I climb the steps to the first floor, where my music classroom is, burning the depressing memory and tossing its ashes out of my skull.

The twists and turns are absolutely incredibly well-done, the mystery of it all keeping you reading on and on. The elements of institutionalised racism are undeniable. I promise you won't be disappointed. And often felt anti-Black in it's portrayal of the teens. I think they're are not the strength of this book as the plot and writing was way better than the characterization but was good and slightly better than your average YA book. I spot my station at the back by one of the windows, with a keyboard on top of the desk and my initials, DR, engraved in gold into the wood.

White supremacy is so global. Chiamaka is driven, type-A, and unlikeable, she knows what she wants and how she wants to get it and she will achieve her goals no matter what cost. One that will resonate with generations to come. The mystery element of the plot gets wrapped up fairly quickly and it becomes obvious who Aces in about halfway through the book, which is fine. We were supposed to start planning our senior projects over the summer, ready to showcase when we got back.

I've read about five mysteries and thrillers this year so far, which, all things considered, is a lot for me.
