That their voices deserve to be heard. Some days, when I do, I just stare at the blackness I see in the mirror hanging on my closet door. For me Tyler Johnson Was Here is less about what happened to Tyler and more about his twin brother Marvin's grief. Tyler Johnson Was Here is about a young man Marvin who has to deal with the unimaginable grief of losing his twin brother Tyler. Tyler Johnson Was Here Book Review Book

Tyler Johnson Was Here is a vivid and heartbreaking portrait of grief, loss, and a young black teen navigating his life after it is turned upside down following a fatal act of police brutality. This seemed like a step in the right direction. It was more about Marvin finding someone he could rely on for comfort, that wasn't in his immediate circle. The difference between Marvin and the man who murdered his brother is that Marvin's story, though there was so much valid rage and sadness in it, still had love. I felt none of those things. I cried, a lot, when he was found dead. I would agree with that assessment, but I don't think that it necessarily made the MC less relatable. It kind of does that throughout as it feels like it's being drawn out, there were many moments where the book should have ended, but it kept going. I mean just look at it. And, as I think most of you may have guessed, the shooting occurred unprovoked. A cry for black people to stop being murdered by police officers, people who should be the very ones protecting them. The depiction of the way the police treat him and his friends is frightening. I at first thought, she was just going to serve a purpose and never show up again, but she becomes a large part of Marvin's life. Tyler Johnson Was Here is moving and very relevant. VERDICT For fans of All-American Boys and The Hate U Give, this emotion-filled title is a standout debut. Speaking of that, no funeral takes place in this book and it's mentioned due to lack of money, but later on there is a mention that they have a lot of money from donations with enough left to send Marvin to school. The thing is, those reads are never easy (and they're not supposed to be), but that's not the reason I hadn't gotten to Tyler Johnson Was Here earlier.

Marvin's story will remake you. Tyler Johnson Was Here is the story of a teen, Marvin Johnson, whose twin brother, Tyler, goes missing and is later found dead. People don't […] know that black folks were never included in the All. I wish Jay Coles success in both his writing and activism, and though this book wasn't perfect, it was a solid way to send a message which I hope is heard and inspires change.

Dewey's #Readathon Book 2 - I had only 100 or so pages left to read, so I finished this one pretty quickly. And then, like Marvin, I was angry. They'll ignore your voice. I do think you'd like them both equally, and seriously don't make THUG the only BLM book you read. It's easy to focus on how someone dies, especially if that death is violent and it's also wrong to lose sight of who the person was. I really like all of these kids.
