Yet Tom's secret self is no noir-like contrivance; it's a manifestation of all that lies beneath, the ooze and shadows, the desire and dread, one that, in turn, bares Edie's secret self too. It's actually a very silly and childish movie, filled with plot holes. A History of Violence can be seen as a thriller, but in many ways it works best during its quieter moments. Director David Cronenberg must have faced a bit of a dilemma when it came to casting someone in the lead role of this film. Shot from behind the couple, this vaguely gynecological angle doesn't align with anyone in the film; it is, rather, the presumptive point of view of the director and, by extension, his willing accomplices -- us. The sheriff, meanwhile, has swung by the Stall home to investigate the shootout that left his neighbor wounded and three men dead. A film that starts in on you hard--but slowly--giving you just one long chance (a monumental single shot sequence) to get up to speed and recognize that if you ever think the story is uneven, implausible, it's because YOU aren't getting it. Both child actors are so bad they are hard to watch. The movie was done halfway thru and it kept going on. After this, Tom is at hospital while the news went worldwide making him a hero. It is also interesting to look at the violence that occurs both outside of Tom's quaint house and in his diner. I understood this movie a little better when I read that it had been based on a cmic book. It`s a good enough ending over all, with some excellent action and it certainly doesn`t spoil the film in any way. Too bad that style doesn't play to this type of movie as it does to the excellent (and disturbing) Dead Ringers. Most disappointing (and disappointed).
