Overall though, I found it a sloggy read that gave me little motivation to keep turning pages. I was anxious to get to the part on the Titanic and was well pleased with the description of the ship and the awful events surrounding the sinking. Knowing how the marriage ends meant there was a sense of impending doom from the start and it grew as I drew closer to the end of the story.

I learned so much about their lives and the sinking of the Titanic. Thank you to #netgalley for this #arc I haven't read much historical fiction lately, and loved this! What would you have done differently? Telling him that she named him after his father whose eyes and swirl of fair hair that he was born with resembles his father. It was a deviation from the norm, and I thought it worked very well. And the fact that The Second Mrs. Astor was about the Titanic, as well as the scandalous and obscenely wealthy Astor family, piqued my interest further. I really liked Abé's nuanced take on Madeleine Astor and her relationship with her husband, John Jacob "Jack" Astor. While I can't imagine a marriage between a 47-year-old man and an 18-year-old girl, the book definitely made it seem like a love story between equals (and not creepy like it seems to me). The novel itself is a leisurely paced fictionalized story of a 17 year old Madeline's journey first as a girl who captures the attention of Colonel Astor's attention, as a fiancée who has to deal with all the attention of press, as a newlywed trying to navigate the societal rejection and disdain, and finally as a young widow. You shouldn't be disappointed. Titanic comes to life again in its beautiful glamor and beauty.
In some instances, however, all I could do was take my best guess. I don't believe I've ever cried when reading a book. Through a series of letters and flashbacks, Madeline recounts for their son, Jack, the couple's courtship and their last days together on the Titanic. The Second Mrs. Astor by Shana Abe I love people stories, and I adored this historical fiction novel filled with exquisite descriptions and beautiful details of a prominent couples' lavish lifestyle. I suspect some of that confusion arose from deliberate disinformation given to the press from the Astor coterie, which seemed acutely attuned to the blowback surrounding the age difference between Jack and Madeleine. They elect to cross the Atlantic in the much-touted new vessel, the Titanic.

Newport, Rhode Island. My only wish was that the book had been longer, with more insight into what happened to Madeline after JJ's death and the birth of their son, as she was still a teenager. I would have thought that her baby would have given her hope and that she was lucky to have been blessed with a part of her dearly departed larger than life husband who was John Jacob Astor IV. However, as POV is something many readers are picky about, I'd only recommend it to readers of historical fiction who are patient with a "stylized" approach to mixing first and third person. The section on the sinking of the Titanic had me riveted to the book and I couldn't put it down. While this historical novel was at times heartbreaking and sad, it left me with more questions than answers. Do you think how she was treated by them was justified? I highly recommend this one to all of my Titanic-loving GR friends! On the surface this seems like it would be a good book. I could have put up with this, if there weren't also these first person intros to almost every chapter. But I really craved something that was unique. I held my breath as the author gave a fictionalized, but very real account of their last moments together on the RMS Titanic. The above quote from the movie Titanic was really all I knew about John Jacob Astor and his young wife Madeleine. His mother Caroline Astor gave Ava Vanderbilt so much trouble because the Vanderbilt's were known as newly rich and weren't considered old money. Madeline was barely 18, Jack was 47. I am a huge fan of anything Titanic, as long as it is done tastefully. They soon leave on a honeymoon for Egypt, where Madeline becomes pregnant.

I think I would have enjoyed it more had it covered Madeline's life after the death of her husband, her loss of inheritance, and her subsequent attempts at finding love again. Not only were there three decades of age difference but he had a son named Vincent that was Madeleine's age from his first marriage who lived with him. The newly expecting couple plans to return home from their honeymoon aboard an opulent new ocean liner, the RMS Titanic. This was an extremely well-written novel about the meeting, relationship, and marriage of Madeleine Force 18 and John Jacob Astor, 46, the richest man in America. Sep The Secret History. I was pulled into the novel right away! The Titanic part brought tears to my eyes because I knew how it was going to end. It happens more and more with me. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what happened to the rest of her life and it seems it was quite an interesting life. Their romantic courtship leads to an advantageous marriage for Madeline, but despite his families' suspicions, she marries him out of love and not for his money. Jul Bridget Jones's Diary. I had a lump in my stomach and felt like crying when Jack put Madeleine in life boat four and him and their loyal dog Kitty perished. It can sustain us through the darkest of times. The novel is very much a message from Madeline to her son- she was pregnant when Astor put her in the lifeboat- so that he would understand how bound the two were to one another. This made it difficult for me to buy into the romance of the story. The tragic final, when it comes, is also disappointing.
Recommended to book clubs by 0 of 0 members. I loved the Author's Note, as well, and really admire the author's research. I enjoyed the switching narratives between first and third person as well. This was a fabulous story, sad in places yes, but ultimately the story of a survive she did. Overall though this book was amazing and really did grip your heart and throw it into the sea. When he marries an 18 year old girl, it rocked the society pages. Test drives are available from 10 am to 8 pm on all days. This is nicely done historical fiction that purports to take the reader behind the scenes of the controversial marriage of Madeline and John Jacob Astor and their perilous voyage on the Titanic. After reading a book a short time ago about Mrs. Astor, the mother of Jack I have been highly anticipating reading this book detailing Jack's second wife. Take, for example, Madeleine's age.
A real love story loved it. This joyful union was not to last as a tragedy upon the Titanic takes his life during the honeymoon.
