However, though the book provides much-needed representation of LGBTQ+ characters, as well as characters of color, the characterization itself is off, as a few of the characters read older than they are. However, he has no idea that his once normal life is about to take a real dark turn, especially since Aces is on to him now. The author's note at the end is a must read, along with the acknowledgements (big shout out to the tea kettle that helped bring us this novel), so please do not skip them!

So this tells the story of the only two black students (Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo) who are in their final year of high school in Niveus Academy. I will admit the first 200 pages were kind of slow and read reaaaally young adult to me, but the ending was wild and so intense and worth it! What's the latest YA book with excellent twists and turns you read and enjoyed? Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé is an absolute artist of crafting tension and suspense. What follows was a heartwarming and heartbreaking story of institutional racism, coming out, breakups, and new relationships. Did you read Ace of Spades or do you want to? This is one of my favourite YA reads in a long time and if I have one complaint it's this: the ending. The messages about racism, classism and homophobia within Ace of Spades were powerful enough to leave me reeling for days after I finished reading. This is good, and you do want to read it.

This book was one big bout of trauma p*rn, in that the characters suffered for nothing. Despite their differences, I found myself loving this little friendship and how they balanced each other out. I write this review as a heads-up and to opine on the lack of mention of the amount of romance and sex in the book and in its blurbs. The plot does not notably improve the odd characterization. It's more open, less lonely. There are other music rooms, mostly for recording or solo practice, but I like this one the most. Ace of Spades is less a mystery than it is a thriller, and thrilling it is. The fact that this book was so isolated from the rest of the world in the modern age made it very hard to believe.
And sometimes, you need a dark, twisty thriller to scare the crap out of you. Like none of their friends outside of school would hurt or mock them. I am so sick of these Black trauma-filled novels that are so obviously catered to white audiences. Because they were inanimate until either Devon or Chiamaka came around. It also doesn't escape notice that the only two students being targeted, Devon and Chiamaka, are the only two Black kids in their school. I grew up in South London in an area known for its diversity. I'm pleased to report that this story holds up to the hype, as I found it to be equal parts entertaining and informative. Chiamaka is the wealthy Queen Bee, a straight-A student with what seems like a direct path to Yale. I had tears after reading the epilogue. Entirely selfish I know, but I would have loved it if Faridah would have expanded more on the ending and its time jumping epilogue, if only so I could have spent more time with the in-depth characters she created. Speaking of isolated—this town, wherever it is, does not exist.
So much suspense from the get-go! She is represented by Zoë Plant at The Bent Agency. When I was reading the print copy occasionally I would forget whose perspective I was in and then had to backtrack to find out. They treat my Black skin like a gun or a grenade or a knife that is dangerous and lethal, when really it's them. During the novel, he learns that his father committed suicide just after their visit. Max, Ruby, and Cecelia are these giant, pale, lighthaired clones of each other, and next to them, my short frame and dark skin stick out like a sore thumb. You never know who you can really trust, and I think Àbíké-Íyímídé does an excellent job and exposing the more diabolical aspects of a dark academia setting.

Unsurprisingly, race is a running theme throughout the book that the author explores through her worlds apart main characters.
