What are we working on next? The feeding areas all had the same features, slow moving water with some foam. The St. Regis River is closed to fishing from November 10th to the third Saturday in May. Below the Flathead River confluence, the water mostly supports only brown trout and the fishing becomes less productive. 5 miles downstream of confluence (old Milltown dam site). This is when the trout population disappeared. The removal of the dam hurt some of our populations of both insects and trout west of town, but I think we are bouncing back strong, just my opinion. I will not tell you that something is fishing well unless I have a reliable report, and those are hard to come by. Here the small headwater stream, Silver Bow Creek, twists and winds beside the Anaconda Settling Ponds until joining Warm Springs Creek at the Warm Springs Wildlife Management Area where it becomes the Clark Fork. What is Fatty Information? Considering the size of the river and the population of Missoula close by, the fishing pressure is low to moderate. Plus, if you time your visit correct, you can get some "insider intel" from the guides floating these stretches. I'm going highly recommend taking a little road trip south on 102 from I90. I found healthy populations of caddis throughout this section as well as some of the most colorful stream cobble - a burnt orange color that was reflected in the coloration of the resident brook trout.

Clark Fork River Fishing Report
As you drive Clark Fork Road, the river will come in and out of view. There were reports all over on how the fishing was incredible and that the river was back. Thankfully, in a twist of irony, arsenic was discovered in the 1980's in Milltown drink water. Once over this hill the trail rejoins the river (about 1 mile). With the warmer water, lower flows, and poorer habitat, trout numbers decline, but the fish in the river tends to be a bit bigger here. If you enjoy fishing small streams, you could try your luck on a couple of the tributaries to the Clark Fork. Now that the fall fishing has started I am obligated to give you a fishing report. Caution is required if you're stepping into the water, this spot is deep and strong. Below the Warm Springs section, the upper river is a small oxbow river, with predominately Brown Trout, and good numbers of them too.

I have observed the healthiest population of fish and insects that I have seen in years. 03/19/2020 Stream levels range from low to normal. Beyond that the flow is so diminished that it probably isn't worth continuing. However, the river can run clear during this hatch, and the fishing is amazing with the clear water conditions. The Blackfoot River is starting to show signs of the end of fall fishing. 12/04/20 The river is cold everywhere but below the dam at Missoula. This hatch is a great opportunity to knock the rust off and get a couple of dry fly eats in before the annual spring runoff. The cold winter weather has slowed the fishing down a little for the Clark Fork, but the spring weather coming should help it heat up a little. Imitations of ants, beetles, and grasshoppers work great at times.

Don't worry, the dog days are not here yet. The Lower Clark Fork has a Salmon fly hatch, but the water is big and would be purely experimental. We also found a few spots on the float with some trout feeding on the midges. 5 miles of easy hiking along the Clark Fork to the Boulder Creek crossing. Period||Stoneflies/Terrestrials||Mayflies/Caddisflies|. Matukas, Woolly Buggers and Bitch Creeks are among some of the favorites. The spring fly fishing on the upper stretches can be great. There have been good reports, even in the recent winter weather, but I think when we warm up later this week into next week, the fishing will get very good.

The mighty lower river near St. Regis has dropped almost 3000 CFS and t river is primed up for some good spring fishing. Our Clarkfork river fishing report comes to you straight from our boats on the river. Trout have memory so you can have success pre-hatch because trout know what to start looking for at this time of year. Some of the hatches I have seen are multiple stoneflies (sallies, lime or chartreuse stones, big goldens, and more), Drakes, PMDs, Big Yellows (That is just what I call them), sedge caddis in a size 10!, tentwing and antenna caddis, and of course more.
