Getting to know the Necky Looksha IV. I did get stuck in the sand a few times in the bay sand when I miscalculated the tide but that's my fault not the boat's. Are sea kayakers starting to let loose a bit? I am 6'4", and I think that this boat is a little small for a paddler my size. This is the King of the Necky line for single sea kayaks.

After trying different boats, …. The foot braces have pivoting foot pads for steering and provide solid support for bracing. I have a larger Necky Looksha IV HV listed which is ideal for a larger person. This boat is ten years old, well used, but rock solid.

The deck rigging is great for holding that gear that you want to keep close at hand and it is nice to have a rudder that you can put down or lift up while paddling by simply pulling on a rope one direction or the other. I did note however that the Looksha was a faster boat for me than the Storm, and that the finishing on the Looksha was done with more precision and care. After seeing all the positive reviews on here I went and found one used about 3 years ago. Perhaps it is too light for me (140 pounds). I lined up and waited for a good wave to ride. It's so easy that I've stopped using my lighter playboats.

The underside of the deck is padded "for comfort and provided more thigh support than many off-the-shelf kayaks" (TW). For VS, "the configuration of the deck and hatches shed water well. " It plows through the waves like a U-boat. It handles nicely on flat lakes or small waves (boat wake and the like) but its just too wobbly for me in wind chop and ocean waves. I have paddled lots of other kayaks and always enjoy the Looksha. After several months of paddling extensively on inland lakes, the (unpredictable) Puget Sound and Pacific coastal swells, I decided on a glass Looksha IV DS (Drop-Skeg) because I love the way the Looksha handles, it's light so I can solo-car-top (I guess the drop-skeg boat saves a little weight over it's rudder-cousin), I haven't experienced any backpain during long paddles, and the boat holds enough gear for multi-day trips. The model I use doesn't have a rudder/skeg, but I bet it would help. The Kevlar Sitka tested was "relatively light and easy to lift on a shoulder and balanced well" (TW). Options and Pricing (1996 design). As per RW response - stability is still an issue at 30 years old, very unstable with wake & moderate winds. The thigh braces are molded into the coaming and padded with foam. The chined hull can make the boat react strongly to some wakes and waves, which can be unnerving for beginning (or very tired) paddlers, and annoying for the rest. I am a new convert to kayaking and the happy owner of a new Looksha IV.

The reviewed Looksha IV is available in our special Super Linear Polymer based on a new Metthalocene catalyst technology, or our traditional glass or Kevlar laminates. Even in chop with boats trying to swamp us, this boat is a kick! I think I will find one and buy it... DL thought the plates on the foot braces were small enough to cause some discomfort on the balls of his feet on a long stint of paddling.

My next boat will likely be a wood glue-and-stitch kit. The deck fittings are "excellent" (DL), "great" (VS). I would recommend this boat for someone with some experience and little fear. Pick one up if you can find a used one. On a scale of 1-10 I can't give my boat a 10 because the seat isn't very comfortable, the carry handles are uncomfortable and there is no thigh padding (unlike Perception boats). Normal wear and tear but in overall very good shape. It is my first boat and I still love it, and do not see outgrowing it anytime soon. Anything to discuss. Years later, an opportunity arose to paddle/purchase a used Looksha IV. Looksha IV HV, fiberglass - My wife and I recently took the fundamental sea kayak course at Northwest Outdoors Center (NWOC) in Seattle, which was extremely good. The pegs can also slide aft, occasionally requiring some fishing around before you can get your footing on them. I was surprised when with others how easy a glide and fast pace it could keep. Like new accessories included are: Paddle leash. Also, the boat was a bit edgy for me. I own a Looksha 1V kevlar…. The foot wells and the cockpit seat each have their own self bailing drains - a good idea, as sitting in a puddle of water can get a bit uncomfortable. It carries a good load of gear, and the hatches have never let in a drop so far - even on rolling clinics.

The refit is easy, just ask your dealer. I never manage to paddle far without the rudder down, but that seems to be the trade-off for the chines and manoeverability. Plastic verions: This is a fast stable boat comfortable in a wide variety of conditions, and overall I am happy with the purchase and recommend it to others. Water that got on the foredeck was not thrown up by the deck hardware.
