Not a thing to do out in the street. This might as well be another Chilton solo record, but the fact that the Big Star name is attached to gives the music the exposure that another Chilton record wouldn't get. And man oh man do "O My Soul" and "Back of a Car" have some cool drums in them. Honestly, I'm not sure to whom I would recommend this album, yet I feel like it's such a bizarre experience that everybody should hear it a couple of times. Tops vocalist Alex Chilton (who was like 17 years old when he sang "Gimme a. ticket for an aeroplane! While many groups were losing connection with reality and "progressing" for its own sake (and while people were buying these albums so as to stay in step with the changing fashions), Big Star was writing "real" rock songs about "real" topics for "real" people. One of the main guys in the group, Chris Bell, quit before they recorded this one, which might be why this one seems more like the Sticky Fingers to the last record's Between The Buttons, aside from the last couple tunes, which sound holy MACKAREL like '65 Beatles. And I'm glad they didn't turn it into an actual song.

If I want messy, gritty, awesome 70's hard rock I'll listen to Aerosmith or take out the Led-- not listen to freaking Big Star. The term "influential. Now he sounds like Roger McGuinn! Alex sounds more appropriate singing this than Nico in my opinion. While the band had almost no commercial success when it was together (a sad fact that by all accounts accelerated the band's collapse), it developed a sizable cult following by the early 80s, just in time for a bunch of post-punk bands to cite them as an influence. The rockers sometimes sound kinda goofy, but they're quite good on the whole. For the love of God, don't forget "You Get What You Deserve. " While switching spots and characters each time such as Eric, Donna and Hyde are upfront the it could switch to Red and Kitty driving and Bob in the back. I don't ususally care much for "naked weepy fragile" songs, but these just sound so demented and real. Radio city was a masterpiece, sisterlovers is a disasterpiece. Though it garnered heavy critical acclaim, poor distribution ended its popularity prematurely.

And the oddly-named closer, "ST 100/6" (??? ) Well, I've never really been one to care about "cool points, " but while I don't come close to sharing in the general love-fest towards the band, I also find reverence towards the band fairly understandable, for better or worse. The first 2 were more sunny 70's pop/rock (which don't get me wrong is awesome stuff too), but this album sounds pretty damn ahead of it's time for being recorded in 1974. Mom and dad live upstairs.

Knowing that this is the last new material the band could ever produce (Chilton died a few years later, and Stephens stopped touring the band as Big Star around that time) gives it at least some heft, too. It's not an album that you can actually survive listening to repeatedly. Having said that, I'd rather lose my record collection than wind up a corpse draped over a fence, and I imagine the Replacements' "Alex Chilton" probably feels the same. Português do Brasil. Some songs i find to be lesser like "Stroke It Noel" or "O, Dana" but the whole album is a very interesting listen and sure experimental for it's time.

Complete ripoff of this album. Given that my feelings for the band don't go beyond considering the debut very good (sometimes great) and the next two pretty good, though, it's impossible for this band to get any more than a one from me. Seriously, they were that bad. Dude, all I hear about this album is that it's great pop music- but get this- it rocks hard.
