While previous Labs lasted a season, the 2017-2019 Lab has created an enduring community among its five pairs of collaborators over the course of two years. Peponides next plans to dedicate more of her time and energy to Radical Evolution, the multiethnic producing collective she co-founded in 2011, which creates artistic events that seek to understand the complexities of the mixed-identity existence in the 21st century.
Beyond their pairs, as an overall group, they have met regularly, and have built a supportive community-from presenting excerpts to one another to organizing outings to see one another's work outside of the Lab. Additional support provided by Constance Christensen, Clarence Otis, Jr. and Jacqui Bradley; Robert Buckholz and Lizanne Fontaine; Ann Tenenbaum and Thomas H. Lee; Saundra and W. Whether we're going through grief or confusion or heartbreak, I do find that humor is there, and we either engage with it, or we don't and for me, I choose to, because I think that sort of shows the fullness of the human condition—great drama, great conflict, but I do always find levity.
