Sera reluctantly agrees because she knows that it is the only way to go unnoticed. Poppy is descended from Nyktos and Sera (she's their granddaughter), so we know their powers through her. Either way, her life is forfeit - it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death. They are about to leave to find Nektas, but Sera is feeling a little lightheaded and tells Nyktos to not worry about feeding from her; that the bloodloss is on Taric. Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent most of her time writing short stories… explains her dismal grades in math. Hook 2/2: I really like the underestimated girl trope.

This is a spoiler but I don't think it would ruin the experience of reading the book. Tonight is her 17th birthday, and she is to become the Primal of Death's Consort. It also means "my queen". Dressed in a white wedding gown and a veil, she is taken to the throne room in the Shadow Temple, so that she can become the Consort to the Primal of Death, as per an agreement made by her ancestor–King Roderick Meriel, in exchange for the Rot to not overtake his beloved land. Is A Shadow in the Ember a standalone, duology, or series?
It just doesn't sit well with me. Holland then explains that Eythos had embers of life, just like Kolis has embers of death–and when Nyktos was born, part of the embers of life had been transferred to Nyktos, and Nyktos would not know if he had it until he went through the Culling. Initially, reading the synopsis I was like "wait what? " After the Primal of Death didn't come for Sera to take her as his consort, she disregarded Seraphena and used her solely to murder. A mix: 68% | Character: 16% | Plot: 14%. It is set years before the events in From Blood and Ash making it the prequel to that series. What I did learn was that Niktos is the King of Gods later in the timeline, which is a title designated to the Primal of Life.
Reading this book contributed to these challenges: Where the firstborn daughter of the line would become the Consort to the Primal of Death, who wasn't Nyktos at that time. Nektas tells her that this is his reason, and he believes that Nyktos knows that too. Characters grow and develop the more books you read, and going back in time to read a prequel before all that development…. She doesn't back down, even when she is fighting literal Gods because she would rather die trying than let bad things happen to her people, her Kingdom, and those she loves. So when we meet Sera and everyone is really mean to her and disappointed in her, and blaming her for the rot, and yet she's still out there helping people and training to be a bad ass, I immediately like her. We also meet Poppy's namesake and hear the prophecy that Poppy is told. Ector, Saion, Rhain, Theon, Lailah, Bele and many others.

It is revealed that the two of them had killed at least four other people, one of whom was actually a friend of the god's.
But we loves it, too. Though I usually have a soft spot for morally ambiguous characters in general, I really believe that the author's writing had a strong influence on this as well. As the Lord leaves, the Queen looks to Sera and tells her to go show the Lord the piece of meat that she is. He admits that one of those who were killed was his friend. There is a lot of history to unlearn and relearn, so there is frankly heavy world-building going on throughout this book. Though Nyktos originally tried to back out of the deal since neither he nor Sera was involved in that deal, he ends up eventually claiming her has his Consort after it becomes unsafe for Sera to remain in the mortal realm. Eythos is Nykto's father and was the true Primal of Life. But as soon as she was born The Rot began. The land of Lasania is dying; the blight as it has been called, encroaches on the land a little more everyday. During Flesh and Fire the characters believe that refers to them, but somehow that prophecy is still believed to be true in terms of Poppy. She is able to kill them, but falls backwards, and the god comes to her aid, but then she sees one of the snakes, freaks out and hits her head on a rock.

Ash then reveals that Kolis is the one who killed Mycella while she was pregnant with Ash, because he believed that it was only fair that Eythos lost his love just as he did, and he managed to destroy Mycella's soul while killing her.
