Driving With A Bad Cv Axle

Autozone actually recommended i do that. I believe it's an R160. Let go of the ebrake so you can rotate the axle. Slides in and out like butter! Now when I try to put the axle back into the transmission, I can get it almost all the way in but there is about an 1/8" gap between the axle and the transmission. After trying for a few more minutes, I tried to put the axle back in to see how hard that part was going to be. I tried a lot of different techniques, none of which made a dent. Once it is lightly tapped in by a 2x4 to 1/8" then it's just as hard getting back out. If the lock ring is too loose, too large in diameter, it won't function properly and will not shrink down and then pop back out locking the cv axle in, instead it will prevent installation. This one had me wrapped up tight for a week! If splines are not lined up exactly then I would have a very difficult time getting it back out. Tried all the tricks mentioned above without success. I normally undo the struts and use the hub as a "hammer" to jam the axle in. Are you having a hard time getting the circlips on the end of the CV axle to seat, or is it another problem. If this is the problem simply remove the lock ring, see if the axle slides in without it to make sure there's not another problem, then squeeze the lock ring in your fingers until it bends and becomes smaller. Grasp the inner joint and see if it can be moved back and forth. I wouldn t reuse that clip, get a new one or return that axle & get another axle. The axle will not fully seat into the splines of the hub. Sometimes the clips can prevent the shaft from being pushed into the transmission completely.
