And then about twenty years ago, my husband and I were looking for a place, we needed studio space, because he's a painter and I needed a writing studio, and we heard about this place up about an hour north of the Twin Cities and it had a tamarack bog.
Even today, after a winter storm had covered the field, I could see dried cornstalks stubbling the fresh white blanket of snow. The bison gave us everything, from tado, our meat, to our clothing and tipi hides. I always feel better if I can see one thing in more than one place and from more than one perspective. The tricky part for me was verifying that this was a practice that Dakhóta people would have used, and so that took more work. If you cannot relate, how do you think it might feel? You know what the grandmothers went through to save the seeds. Today, it was the clatter of snowshoes on a wood floor, the way the wind turned white in a storm. And the seeds bookend the story, so that you see, in a way, this is really the seed story. Aren't mosses a perfect example of adaptation? But it was just as well that he hadn't lived long enough to see me marry a white farmer, a descendent of the German immigrants that he ranted against for stealing Dakhóta land. She is Mdewakanton descendent, enrolled on the Rosebud Reservation. She meets a great aunt who fills in the gaps in her family history and reacquaints her with the importance of seeds as a means to connect to the past, provide current sustenance and serve as a spiritual guidepost to the future. It's about the stories her father told her, the things he taught her, how he wouldn't let her forget what happened in Mankato in 1862. But a definite 5 star unforgettable read for me.
They're the ones who gave me what I needed to know in order to write the book and then I put the story around it. Still, this book felt like a call to those parts of me that still need to heal from trauma inflicted through colonialism. Books that focus on Native American history always remind me of some of the worst of our nation's moments--the hubris shown by those in power, the inhumanity that victimizes those perceived as "other", the loss of culture when the minority is pummeled by the hailstorms of the majority. The story is narrated by four Indigenous women whose lives interweave across generations, but as Wilson emphasized in our conversation, the story is really the seed story. One variety is that it teaches you a mindfulness, it teaches you to be present in a way that I think the world around us often pulls us away.
