I loved the picturesque descriptive text so well read with feeling and character. Hislop (The Island, 2007) uses the Ramírezes to symbolize and personalize the conflict. There, she discovers a pavilion on a lake where the wives of maharajahs once bathed, now abandoned and cloaked in mystery. The eldest brother, Antonio, fights for the Republic in Madrid and Barcelona. A well written book, but unfortunately for me, not quite as good as Victoria's previous novels.. Jillian M, Librarian. The first part of the book is very lovely and is about dancing. Even in times of war, one must find joy and express it. Such a shame as I was looking forward to a return to sunny Greece. Sonia's story, though interesting, didn't grab my attention as much as the story of the Ramirez family, so the book started a bit slow for me. Her debut novel, The Island (2005) was included in The Times '100 Books That Defined the Noughties'. My interest in the impact of war and its place in literature drew me to The Return, but I had to read 100 pages for the story to really take off. But although the backdrop is different, Spain instead of Greece, it that same strain of the story. War-scarred Mireille is fighting with the Resistance; Claire has been seduced by a German officer; and Vivienne's involvement is something she can't reveal to either of them. Thoughtful, intelligent and compelling.

I loved the story of The Island, even visited Spinalonga with its mystery and uniqueness, and I wasn't quite so transported by this sequel. As I read the Hand of Fatima the atmosphere that it conjured up reminded me of the tricks and treachery in Lazarillo of Tormes as well as the street scenes described. When it finally comes, there is no counterattack from Allied forces - the Channel Islands are simply not worth defending. It was an enjoyable read that entertained me over a couple of days but no more than that. The shifts from present to flashback are artless and don't segue as well as I would've edited them... which makes me wonder why they passed into publication. I imagined this book would give detailed descriptions of the cobbled Granada streets, explanations of the customs of the locals and lots of vibrant flamenco imagery. I strongly recommend this book to everyone I know, as I am sure that they will not be disappointed. I don't understand why Hislop didn't just write the Ramirez family story; the fact that she needed to ensconce it in a modern envelope and then make that modern envelope so shallow diminished the rest of it. As if this weren't enough of an integrity challenge, we are further asked to believe the strong connections between the Ramirez family and Sonia, which are inevitably revealed towards the end. It's interesting that Hislop chose to tell the story from a modern perspective — and, in particular, through Miguel's recollections. The long awaited follow up to The Island, this didn't grab me as I thought it would. The result is a moving journey through the lost landscape of youth that also discloses the wellsprings of Camus's aesthetic powers and moral vision.
